Energy Star Initiatives Update Related to CRE
Earlier this year, the Administration targeted the Energy Star program for elimination. Privatization has also been talked about. BOMA and our allies have been on Capitol Hill educating Congress about the importance of the program to the commercial real estate sector and that it is deserving of support. By sending this letter to your elected official, you will help reinforce the narrative we present when meeting with them and their staff. The echo chamber can move mountains; that is why we need your help.
The program’s fate rests with the House and Senate Appropriations Committees, which dole out annual funding to the two agencies that share jurisdiction over the Energy Star Program. The Department of Energy mainly handles the portfolio manager program. In contrast, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mainly handles the consumer product (blue labels you see at Home Depot/Lowe's/Walmart) side of the program. There is shared management of the program, but the majority of funding comes from the EPA allocation in the Interior and Environment Appropriations (spending) bill.
