Flat Top Lake, located near Beckley, West Virginia, was conceived in 1949 by a group of visionaries led by Dr. Robert W. Chambers and his brother George B. Chambers. Their dream of creating an artificial lake materialized with the construction of a gravity earth-filled dam across Glade Creek, completed in 1951. The project faced financial challenges, but the commitment of its members, many of whom purchased additional lots, ensured its success. Over the years, the community has grown, with numerous residences built and continuous enhancements made to the lake and its surroundings. (flattoplakewv.org, Wikipedia)
The Flat Top Lake Association has consistently invested in infrastructure and amenities to enhance the quality of life for its members. Notable improvements include the construction of the George B. Chambers Memorial Bridge in 1976, the development of recreational facilities like tennis courts and nature trails, and the implementation of modern utilities such as public water and sewer systems. Environmental initiatives, like the dredging of the lake in 2008, have been undertaken to preserve the lake's health and usability. Safety upgrades, including dam reinforcement projects, demonstrate the Association's commitment to long-term sustainability.
In recent years, the Association has emphasized transparency and member engagement. The launch of a new website serves as a central hub for community news, important documents, and member directories. Regular updates, including board meeting minutes, are made available to keep members informed and involved. The Association's leadership, including the Chairman and dedicated staff, continue to work diligently to maintain and improve the community, ensuring that Flat Top Lake remains a cherished place for current and future generations.
