Highlights: MABA 2026 Recognition Awards + survey & pictures!
MABA is proud to share highlights from the fourth annual MABA recognition awards ceremony. These awards helped to celebrate individuals in the biosolids community who exemplify the role of a champion for the wastewater and biosolids sector. The award winners have demonstrated commitment, ingenuity, leadership and service to MABA, to the biosolids profession, and to the community at large.
MABA Young Professional Biosolids Champion award - Xiao Guo
Malcolm is a talented innovator, educator, engineer and leader who is making a difference for the environment and every community that generates wastewater (that's everyone) for the past 25 years. He brings together incredible vision and implementation toward sustainable solutions for biosolids.
He is shaping policy through solid science through research projects. He has provided technical support to professional organizations, valuable input and responses to proposed biosolids regulations in MD and VA. He’s shown ingenuity and leadership as principal investigator for a Water Research Foundation project to investigate the impact and potential treatment of recycle flows within the wastewater plant to reduce overall PFAS. And, Malcolm has dedicated his career to promoting the understanding and value of biosolids as a renewable resource. If you have heard him speak, you know it is his pleasure to share his passion and projects at multiple conferences.
MABA Lifetime Achievement award - Lynne Moss
Over her career Lynne has made major contributions in the fields of biosolids management and odor control. She has been active in the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and in WEF’s member associations, especially in the Texas and New England Water Environment Associations along with several biosolids management associations including the Mid Atlantic Biosolids Association, (MABA), the Northeast Biosolids and Residuals Association (NEBRA), the Midwest Biosolids Association (MBA) and the Southeast Biosolids Association (SEBA). She is currently an active member of MABA and NEBRA’s Regulatory and Legislative Committees. As part of these efforts, she is on a team monitoring and reporting on PFAS related activities in various states. These efforts are extremely valuable based on the current level of activity taking place at the State level.
Lynne was the WEF Residuals and Biosolids Committee (RBC) Chair from October 2017 – September 2019. She led the RBC Specialty Conference Focus Group, as Vice Chair and Chair, from October 2020 until October 2024.
Lynne has taken the time and made the effort to share her knowledge which has resulted in significant contributions to our profession. In addition to the many presentations and workshops during her career, in fact she gave an informative and insightful presentation this morning, she has supported the development of many publications that have helped to advance the management of biosolids.
Special Presidential Recognition award - Anne Marek
As many of you know, the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Association has undergone a period of incredible development and transformation over the last few years. At the center of that growth has been a leader whose commitment and diligence are matched only by her humility.
Anne Marek first became involved with MABA in 2018. A Professional Engineer with over 20 years of experience in the water utility market, Anne brought her technical expertise and a deep passion for infrastructure to our board. Since 2022, she has served as our President, guiding us through four years of unprecedented progress.
Under Anne’s leadership, MABA has grown in every measurable way. She was integral to the hiring of our Executive Director, Mary Baker, and she spearheaded the creation of the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Foundation, our 501c3 sister organization dedicated to vital research and education.
From the expansion of our membership to the revitalization of our committees—including the dynamic Reg/Leg committee and our new Communications project—Anne has ensured that MABA remains a leading voice in regional and national biosolids initiatives.
Anne's leadership style has always been about the success of the collective rather than the recognition of the individual. This is why the inscription on this special award feels so fitting:
'Presented to Our Dedicated President, 2022 - 2026, Anne Marek. A Leader is a teacher who succeeds without taking credit. And, because credit is not taken, credit is received. Thank you for your commitment and service.'
MABA is humbled to have been led by you, and your contributions to this community will not be forgotten.
