Winnipeg, September 22, 2017 – Pharmacists Manitoba welcomed the support of Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister in the ongoing debate over proposed changes to small business taxes which the Federal Government is contemplating. In Manitoba, almost all pharmacies are considered small businesses and 60% of the pharmacies are independently owned.
“We are concerned about the proposed tax changes in Ottawa, and how these changes would affect the pharmacies in the province, so it is very positive to see Premier Brian Pallister come forward and offer his support,” said Barret Procyshyn, President of the Board of Directors for Pharmacists Manitoba. “Community pharmacies have to invest significantly in their business in order to continually provide the best possible care to their patients. This includes significant investments in their infrastructure, inventory and new technology. They do so at great expense and at great personal risk. The proposed changes in Ottawa could significantly affect pharmacies ability to make these investments and innovate for patient care.”
Procyshyn noted pharmacies in Manitoba employ a wide range staff, from pharmacy technicians to cashiers and other staff to sustain the business.
“Pharmacies represent the most accessible health professional for many Manitobans, and are a very important part of the communities business fabric of Manitoba. We are glad Premier Pallister is recognizing the risks these proposed changes in Ottawa represent and standing up for small business in our province.”
