Learn About Assisted Living

What is Assisted Living?

Assisted Living is a long-term care option that offers support for older adults who value their independence but need help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, managing medications, or preparing meals. These communities are designed to provide personalized care in a residential setting that promotes dignity, engagement, and quality of life.

Assisted Living bridges the gap between independent living and skilled nursing care. It empowers individuals to maintain autonomy while receiving the support they need to thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.

What Services are Typically Offered?

Assisted Living communities in Utah may offer a wide range of services, including:

  • Assistance with daily living activities (bathing, grooming, dressing)
  • Medication management
  • Housekeeping and laundry services
  • Nutritious meals and snacks
  • 24/7 staff availability
  • Social, recreational, and wellness programs
  • Transportation and appointment coordination
  • Memory care for individuals living with dementia

Each community is unique. Residents and families are encouraged to tour several options and ask questions about care services, staff training, pricing, and culture.

Who Licenses and Regulates Assisted Living in Utah?

In Utah, Assisted Living communities are licensed and regulated by the Utah Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). Communities must meet state requirements for care, safety, staffing, and quality standards.

There are two levels of Assisted Living licensure in Utah:

  • Type I: For residents who require limited assistance and can exit the building independently in an emergency.
  • Type II: For residents who need more extensive support and may require help evacuating in an emergency.
